Puerto Piramides is in the heart of the Valdès Peninsula National Park, whose wild life protection has made it a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

My suggestion:
Puerto Piramides has some good hiking trails.
Summary:

Puerto Piramides is a tiny village opposite the beach of Golfo Nuevo. It has a few sandy roads where you will find lots of hotels, travel agents offering boat trips, and a few shops and restaurants.

You really should take a boat trip on the Gulf to go whale watching. There are several types of boats available and I chose the smallest. It is a fascinating spectacle. The whales come quite close to the boats and you can see their tails, and their fins and watch them jumping in the distance... It's a really poetic moment, truly emotional, and unforgettable for children and families travelling together.

Puerto Piramides is the only village on the Valdés peninsula and the last inhabited place before you reach the arid lands to the east. It's the ideal base for exploring the 6 nature reserves of the peninsula, its wildlife and its rugged coasts.

Puerto Piramidès is a town on the Valdés Peninsula, in the province of Chubut. Its a good base from which to visit the Peninsula. The town is well named because its cliffs do look like pyramids. Very pretty!

My suggestion:
If you choose to make Puerto Pyramidès your base, you will be close to all the main attractions on the Peninsula. On the other hand, it is very small! If you want to go out then you need to go to Puerto Madryn (which is bigger and offers more excursions, etc.).
Summary:

There's no doubt Puerto Piramidès is charming. A lot of it has to do with where it is. You're on the edge of the cliffs, with ocean as far as the eye can see and 10 metres below you are the sea lions. So the landscape is first class. On the other hand, the town itself didn't do much for me. It's quite isolated.

Puerto Piramidès is the only town on the peninsula. The route to get there is pretty rough. The distances are long and a bit tedious. But it is really worth the effort. Well, it's up to you to see whether you prefer calm or partying.

Whether you stay at Puerto Piramidès or not, you have to go into it to pay the entry fee to the nature reserve. And during a trip to Argentina you wouldn't want to miss that for anything.

At 100km from Puerto Madryn, every year almost 800 whales arrive in the bay off Puerto Pirámides. This is the port from where you can go whale watching.

My suggestion:
Some boats that seat 25 passengers will squeeze in up to 50 people. If you have the choice, go out on a Zodiac. It's more expensive but worth every penny!
Summary:

A visit to Puerto Pirámides during a trip to Argentina, is a chance to get up close to whales.

Each year nigh on 800 whales come here to give birth. Before boarding, everyone has to put on orange, waterproof ponchos and big life jackets. We all looked like Kenny from Southpark! We headed off and after no more than 5 minutes we spotted the first whales.

Whale watching has to be one of the most amazing experiences you can have. The whales swam inches from the boat, their heads and tails forming crests on the sea. One even swam under the boat. It was breathtaking. A truly unforgettable moment.
