Getting to Salinas Grandes is an adventure. It's an hour and half's journey from Purmamarca which is 1,000 m lower down. I remember the precipitous Cuesta de Lipan, a 30 km long pass with very tight bends. The road tops out at 4,170 metres. I have a very special memory of it. But the arrival at the salt flats surpassed our expectations. An immense expanse of white, occasionally covered with a fine film of water in the rainy season. Workmen in overalls that cover them completely while they are working the "white gold". Unequalled purity.
