In the south of Sri Lanka, Hikkaduwa is a seaside resort which offers water sports, ideal for families and couples.
My suggestion:
In the monsoon season, underwater visibility is reduced because of the currents, so not as ideal for flippers/goggles/snorkels.
Summary:
I went there in January and the sky was grey and rainy the majority of the time. That being said, it rains mostly during the evening and night so during the day you can still get by well. The temperature is pleasant and the beach amazing. Hikkaduwa is known for its lagoon and the richness of its marine depths. Divers will enjoy themselves there.
Arriving directly from Colombo I really liked this first impression of Sri Lanka. The people are welcoming and the atmosphere is nice. It remains a highly touristy destination and not the most authentic in the country, but if you are on holiday in Sri Lanka I recommend this place to enjoy the beach. Of course there are some bars to go partying but altogether it's quite calm.
