Both a city and Bohol's main port, Tagbilaran brings together a range of services all in one place. As well as serving as a logistics hub, it has a shopping centre, an immigration bureau and both a number of accommodation options and a choice of good restaurants to offer.

Most travellers arrive in Tagbilaran by plane or boat. It is possible to sail to the city's port from Negros, Siquijor or Cebu, which lies on the southern part of the island of the same name. Though lacking in nice things to see and do, this port city is not an unpleasant place in itself. Stranded in Tagbilaran due to a typhoon, I had the opportunity to take advantage of some of the good restaurants here, such as Payag and the Garden Café, the latter of which specialises in providing waitering/waitressing work for deaf and mute people. I also paid a visit to the immigration bureau, where I was met with a friendly smile and managed to obtain clear, accurate information. Those wanting to extend their visa for a stay of longer duration will find this centre ideal for the purpose. Finally, I rounded off my day with a short walk, first taking in Rizal Plaza, which is located in front of the huge cathedral, then continuing on around the city centre so that I could buy some good quality fruit.
