Rustaq (known in Oman as Al-Rustaq) is around 2 hours inland from Muscat by car.
My suggestion
The town of Rustaq is surrounded by dry and mountainous landscapes. It is a stopover on the way to Djebel Shams (only by 4x4).

Nakhal is one of the most impressive and best restored forts in the Sultanate of Oman.
My suggestion
Because of its proximity to Muscat, a visit to the Nakhal Fort can be a full- or half-day trip. If you are traveling, Nakhal is often the first stop before climbing the Hajar mountains.
Jabal Akhdar is a mountainous region located approximately 2 hours' drive from Muscat. It's a magnificent place, between mountains and greenery, where the sun and the heat seem to have spared cultivation and vegetation.
