Rustaq is a small provincial town in Oman. It is best to spend a day there with a view to continuing your travels inland. You can stop off there to recharge your batteries and stock up on provisions for the trek to the summit of Djebel Shams.
Just like every other town in the country, the Al-Rustaq fort dominates the town and offers a stunning view of the mountains and the town below.
Rustaq's stunning hot spring, called Ain Al Kasfa, is particularly memorable.
 It is the country's most popular spring, renowned for its healing powers against skin ailments. The main spring is closed to the public, but you will find some establishments which let you dip your feet in the 45°C water.

Rustaq (known in Oman as Al-Rustaq) is around 2 hours inland from Muscat by car.

Nakhal was my first Omani stop outside Muscat, and I must say that this fort and the site where it is located are a sure bet in the Sultanate's landscapes. Built on a plain, surrounded by palm trees, with the Hajar mountains in the background, the Nakhal Fort alone is an Omani icon. Once inside, people realize the importance of this fort: terraces, towers, stairs, multiple and varied rooms shine a light on the excitement that ruled there at its height. One of this site's nice surprises are the reenactments performed by the Ministry of Tourism experts in various rooms. One can see what a library or a child's room might look like in Oman in the early 19th century. <a href="/oman/">During your stay in Oman</a>, visiting the Nakhal Fort will probably be one of the highlights of the trip.
