My suggestion
Sohar is a possible stopping place for people leaving Muscat on the way to Dubai, Abu Dhabi or the United Arab Emirates. Allow a maximum of half a day there. Get there by road from Muscat (preferably in a 4-wheel drive).
Jabal Akhdar is a mountainous region located approximately 2 hours' drive from Muscat. It's a magnificent place, between mountains and greenery, where the sun and the heat seem to have spared cultivation and vegetation.
