Sohar (or Suhar in Omani) is a port about 3 hours by road north of Muscat. It's a good place to stop for families as well as culture lovers and adventurers who are just passing through.

Sohar is famous in the country for its port and its aluminium industry. Apart from that there are not a lot of tourist activities.
It's mostly just a stopping point on the road to Dubai where you can stretch your legs and visit Sohar fort. I particularly remember Al Hujra souk at Sohar. There are numerous crafts objects surrounded by wonderful fortified walls. There are also a lot of shopping centres (or malls) and supermarkets if you want something to eat or drink on the road.
In my opinion it's a peaceful town where you can relax a bit before you arrive in the frenetic activity of Dubai. But don't look on the town as a place to stay because you will be disappointed.
