Oman

Venturing out into the Wahiba Sands desert.

Wahiba Sands is 10,000 km2 of sand stretching throughout the centre of Oman but is only 200 km south west of Muscat. In Oman, as you cross the desert you will see that there is a lot accommodation there.

Crossing a sand sea

When you get to the start of the Wahiba Sands, you will feel completely lost . In fact, as there are no points of reference in this immense stretch of sand it is impossible to get your bearings. That is why you should not venture out alone, without preparation or the minimum amount of equipment.

During a trip to Oman, many local guides are available to take you across the desert and provide activities. So you can cross the Wahibi Sands at the wheel of a 4x4 and climb huge sand dunes. To get going, the last town before the desert is Al Wasil, located around 11km away.

Hospitality and comfort

When you cross the desert, make sure you have enough drinking water , also make sure you have bedding. Something can always crop up, like a vehicle stuck in a sand dune, which means you will have to sleep wherever you are.

However, even in the heart of the desert, the Omanis have accommodation options. In fact, at the start of the desert, not far from Al Wasil, you can stay in a luxury hotel. This establishment has air conditioned tents and all the facilities of a city hotel.

Nightfall in the desert.

If you prefer something more authentic, a little further along you will find real Bedouin tents, without air conditioning, so you can experience the real thing with the local people.
