I was unlucky during my stay on Stewart Island, as we were affected by bad weather and many of my planned activities were canceled. It didn't stop me from enjoying the island, and recognizing its beauty, but it did hit home that there is little to do here apart from the open-air activities. The island benefits from lush, green vegetation and an abundant bird population. Apparently, there are kiwis, but I didn't see any. On the other hand, a kaka seemed to enjoy the terrace of my guest house. The best option is to discover Stewart Island on foot or by bike : even though it is possible to rent a car there, the island's only village, Oban, isn't exactly large! For those who want to get away from civilization, the Rakiura Walk extends into the wildest reaches of the island - but make sure you plan all your foot rations. As for me, I made do with a walk along Half Moon Bay and a boat trip to Ulva, a small, uninhabited island, where you can see even more birds.
