In the local dialect, "Apani Dhani" means "Our Hamlet", an affectionate name given to the place by Ramesh C. Jangid, founder of the ecolodge and a pioneer of a form of militant tourism in India, especially in Rajasthan and his own native region of Nawalgarh.

Naggar is a very pleasant place to visit when <a href="/india/">traveling northern India</a>. The woods and forests all around are absolutely splendid. The village has several very nice guesthouses and the local people are especially welcoming. I was at first surprised but then charmed by all the stone-roofed wooden houses. These are typical for the region and lend the village lots of character. Additionally, the views of the mountains all around are wonderful. Don't be afraid to ask the villagers for advice about the walks to do around Naggar. Some can be completed in a day and are magnificent. No need for a guide, but don't forget to take a map and compass: I didn't take one and ended up having to retrace my steps!

Naggar is charming. Built on the side of a mountain, it's the perfect place for trekking in the forest. My favorite walk was along the track leading to the picturesque village of Malana. There are long distance trails which are accessible from the village, but I wasn't able to try any of them, so I can't give you any more information. There are a few temples which are characteristic of the regional style and worth a visit, as well as an art gallery set up by the Russian painter and botanist, Nicolas Roerich, who came to live in Naggar in the twenties seeking spiritual enlightenment. As you can see, Naggar is a place to come to if you're looking for tranquility. There is no tourist hassle here or touts and, frankly, I like it that way. So, is this a place to add <a href="/india/">to your Indian itinerary</a> ? Why not, and particularly if you have time to spare.
