If you're on a big tour of India, Calicut is a great first stop in the lovely region of Kerala. It's also the departure point for trips to Wayanad, which is slightly further north.

My suggestion:
I suggest you spend at least a day in Calicut, so you have the time to visit the neighbourhood that houses its ancient mosques. Take a rickshaw around town and stop off at the main sites.
Summary:

We arrived at Calicut early in the morning, after a long train ride from Goa. We were met by sunshine and a cleanliness that we hadn't seen elsewhere during our trip to India.

Even if the roads around the station were crowded and there were no restaurants or greasy spoons where we could have breakfast, we quickly realised that a bit further on, towards the quarter that houses the mosques, an enchanting side of life in Kerala awaited.

An old man offered to show us the way and gave us a tour of the main monuments, including the wood-built Kuttichira Mosque, which is over 600 years old. A bit further on, men were taking an early morning bath.

It was at the water's edge that we finished our tour of Calicut, with time enough to photograph the smiliest fishermen in Kerala. Then it was time to head off towards the jungle of Wayanad, only an hour's bus ride away!
