Like many <a href="/india/">people traveling India</a>, I went to Amritsar to see the Golden Temple, a sacred place for the Sikh community. It is particularly calm and quiet there, and it's a nice place to spend the day at. The monument itself is truly breathtaking, especially at sunrise or sunset, when colorful rays of light reflect off the building's facade. I also recommend going for a meal in the community kitchen, where you'll eat alongside travelers from all over India and the entire world. I traveled a few kilometers outside Amritsar, to the border with Pakistan, to watch the ceremony performed by the two opposing armies as the sun was setting. It's an astonishing spectacle, and one it would be a shame to miss when visiting the region. It serves as a reminder of all that lies at stake in the area around this border.

India is simply overflowing with temples and religious monuments, and Amritsar is home to one of the most splendid: Harmandir Sahib, better known as the Golden Temple. Easily recognizable with its white buildings and golden dome, Amritsar's Golden Temple simply invites exploration. Settle down to watch the Sikhs performing their ablutions; walk around the sacred pool in the company of kindly-faced pilgrims; go to admire the Sikh holy book housed in the golden dome; let yourself become intoxicated with the myriad colors of the saris contrasting deliciously with the white marble of the buildings; and finally, share a meal at the temple, seated on the floor, in the company of Sikhs who've traveled here from all over the country. Any trip to Amritsar wouldn't be complete without an excursion to the Wagah border between India and Pakistan. The border closing ceremony takes place every evening and presents an astonishing spectacle blending theatrical comedy with military tradition. One thing is certain, this was a surprising and memorable experience on my<a href="/india/">trip to India</a> ! The Punjab delighted me with the warmth of its people, their smiles … and their food! When I was in Amritsar, I let myself be tempted by those tasty, sweet and savory combinations, as well as by the famous tandoori chicken served with kulcha bread. The numerous street stands and the city's restaurants offer enough to tantalize the taste buds of even the finest gourmets!

The Golden Temple, the warm hospitality of the Sikhs and the food, with its myriad flavors – Amritsar will charm both fans of architecture and history and lovers of fine food in equal measure!
