In the local dialect, "Apani Dhani" means "Our Hamlet", an affectionate name given to the place by Ramesh C. Jangid, founder of the ecolodge and a pioneer of a form of militant tourism in India, especially in Rajasthan and his own native region of Nawalgarh.

Pemayangtse Gompa is the main attraction of Pelling. This monastery can be found at around 1.5 kilometres into the road to Geyzing. I was surprised by the joyful, lively atmosphere there. It must be said that the monks, whatever their age, live in the pretty stone houses just next to it.
Pemayangtse Gompa was the first Buddhist monastery that I visited during my <a href="/india/">trip to India</a>. So in the prayer hall I was impressed by the very delicate paintings in blue tones which adorn the walls. Some of the artwork reminds you of the Hindu pantheon: the leopard skin recalls Shiva, the multiple arms evoke Vishnu and the elephant head the God Ganesh. On the second floor, imposing statues incarnate Padmasambhava, the 'precious master' of Buddhists. As for the psychedelically coloured structures, they are actually candles made from yak butter!
It's not necessary to continue the journey towards Geyzing up until the Rabdentse ruins if time is scarce: they aren't highly interesting.
