If you go to Konark, it will no doubt be to see the temple, dedicated to the sun god, Surya. It's a classified UNESCO World Heritage Site, so be prepared to see a temple that is truly magnificent. First of all it's huge, designed to represent Surya's chariot and is divided into several parts. You can no longer see the tallest part, the Shikhara, as it collapsed but at the time it rose to above 70 meters. The Jaga Mohan, the main sanctum, is an enormous structure measuring 36 meters along its sides and over 30 meters high. Walking along the temple walls, you'll be impressed by its innumerable sculptures and low reliefs that depict scenes of daily life along with some more erotic ones; don't forget it was Indians who invented the Kama Sutra! A chariot would not be a chariot if it didn't have wheels, so the temple is also decorated with 24 richly and finely sculpted wheels, each measuring 3 meters in circumference. This was one of the most beautiful of all the temples that I had the chance to see in India and I highly recommend that you put it on your list of places to visit <a href="/india/">.
