In the local dialect, "Apani Dhani" means "Our Hamlet", an affectionate name given to the place by Ramesh C. Jangid, founder of the ecolodge and a pioneer of a form of militant tourism in India, especially in Rajasthan and his own native region of Nawalgarh.

Hampi is a restorative, re-energizing place to visit : a village cut in two by a river you can cross only by dugout canoe.It is a suitable place to head to whether going there after visiting the beaches of Goa or after evenings spent clubbing in Bangalore. It offers opportunities to go walking, especially close by the local temples carved into the rock, to go bathing, in the same place the elephants take their daily baths, or to spend evenings around the campfire accompanied by the sound of the guitar. This is because Hampi attracts another group of visitors in addition to tourists from Kerala and clubbers from Goa: : laid-back, easy-going backpackers come here in search of an enjoyable place to be offering the right kinds of things to do – such as the not-to-be-missed visit to the main temple, with its crowds of Hindus and its large monkey population – and good restaurants: at these, classic or contemporary films are projected on the terraces each evening, which you can watch while you eat and drink at your leisure. I enjoyed Hampi's calm ambiance, its hippy feel and its isolation. I loved leaping from rock to rock in between bathes and the fresh fruit juices far from the everyday noise and chaos of India. I'll be returning there on <a href="/india/">my next trip to the land of the sacred cow</a>, that's a given.

I found Hampi to be one of the most beautiful places in India! I have very special memories of days spent cycling through incredible landscapes that hide ancient temples and palaces. Hampi is the former capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. It's a wonderful village to walk around, to go shopping in and to visit its little, town temple, which bustles with life. One place you must go to during <a href="/india/">your trip to India</a>, is its restaurant/tea room - a riverside, backpackers' favorite called The Mango Tree, With a swing and little tables on its terrace, you'll eat amazing food, easily spending an afternoon watching time go by.

Hampi is one of the few places I have visited in India that has the same effect on all travelers: no matter whether you are looking for a little history, some peace and quiet, splendid landscapes, a chance to meet other travelers, or the opportunity to try your hand at rock climbing, you will find Hampi to be one of the marvels of India!
When you go to Hampi, a little visit to the temple dedicated to the monkey god Hanuman is a must! From the top of its 600 steps, there are stunning panoramic views out over the surrounding area to be had. The playful monkeys that have chosen to live around the temple add to the magic of the place, and their antics will be ample compensation for your tired legs! 
Rent a moped to get there, then head off to explore the rich countryside of Karnataka, as well as the lunar landscape all around the village: it is said that these strange rocks were placed there by Hanuman himself when playing as a child. 
After a day spent exploring Hampi and its surrounding area, there is no better way to relax than by sitting down at one of the ghats by the side of river. The women who wash their saris there offer a marvelous, multicolored spectacle, and both young and old alike will enjoy watching Lakshmi, the temple elephant, taking her daily bath!
