Considered to be the island of the gods for the ancient Greeks, Crete is the most southerly land in Europe. I found it incredibly beautiful and I loved the kindness of the inhabitants. There are few forests and rivers in Crete but I was particularly impressed by the olive groves, a green mantle covering the majority of the island and which counterbalances the arid almost African climate. Crete is a wonderful place for doing nothing and the beaches are heavenly, a fabulous finishing point after all your visits during <a href="/greece/">your trip to Greece</a>. As for landscape, my favourite was the Samaria gorge, a stone maze of more than 16km with a depth of 300 metres and a width varying from 2 to 250 metres.
