Here is one of the most remote sites in Armenia! To reach Kakavaberd, it is necessary to travel at walking pace on a less than secondary road or consider a trek on foot through the mountains. In this valley, no houses, no hamlets... The nearest village is Garni, a dozen kilometres away. 
Amid mixed forests and barren peaks, Kakavaberd appears as the only trace of civilisation. One wonders about what and against whom have used this fortress perched like an eagle's nest on the summit of its mountain... The walls, particularly well preserved, with numerous turrets, tell a different story, around the year one thousand, the Bagratuni dynasty reigned over the highlands, home to a brilliant Armenian kingdom.
Kakavaberd has been abandoned since the 13th century. The mountainous environment of the Khosrov National Reserve has fused its stones with its basalt rocks and its high altitude prairies. A site incredibly well integrated into the natural landscape, Kakavaberd seems to be an extension of the mountain, a great reward for those courageous enough to climb those heights!
