The Zvartnots Cathedral sits apart from the country's other churches and monasterys. Here you'll find only ruins; this cathedral is one of the most incredible religious vestiges never to be completed. Built in the 7th Century and dedicated to the Armenian Patron Saint, St.Gregoire, the cathedral was a massive undertaking for its time, being a lofty 45 metres high and deemed to be one of the most beautiful in the world. It was, unfortunately, destroyed by an earthquake in 930 and was never restored. I have to be honest and say that I wasn't particularly impressed by the site, which comprises of a few pillars and sections of wall. I had a hard time trying to imagine the cathedral's former glory, particularly in a country where religious buildings are a <a href="/armenia/">major tourist attraction</a>.
