Cono de Arita is a cone of black lava and salt, set in the immensity of the Argentine puna. At 200 m high, it dominates the Salar de Arizaro.. Which is known for being the biggest salt flat in Argentina and the third biggest in the world, after Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia and Salar de Atacama, in Chile. To get to Cono de Arita you need to take Route 51 in the direction of Salta as far as <a href="/argentina/">San Antonio de los Cobres</a> and then Route 27 towards Tolar Grande. Its impossible to mistake it once you get there. Its dark grey facade is a total contrast to the immaculate white of the salar. In the past the Cono de Arita was a sacred place for the Indians of the region and nowadays it impresses the travellers come to explore the <a href="/argentina/">treasures of North West Argentina</a>. Because of its isolation and tranquility, Cono de Arita is a good place to meditate. In the surrounding Salar d'Arizaro are the remains of animals fossilized by the salt.
