The Drake Passage (named after Sir Francis Drake) is famous for being difficult to sail, because of the often bad weather conditions. It's also a passage that has a lot of history because lots of explorers crossed it on their way to Antarctica. I felt like one of them once I had got on the ship and was on the way out to see the southern pack ice - it was a very impressive and emotional moment. There are various companies that offer a trip through the Drake Passage, a journey that is usually coupled with an exploration of the Antarctic peninsula, which has numerous treasures. I recommend choosing a trip which includes several days exploration of Antarctica because you'll find that even that is too short.

There's no alternative, if you are doing an Antarctic cruise, you have to cross the notorious Drake Passage and its enormous waves. The crossing lasts about 24 hours and can be more or less calm. I was lucky enough to have a calm crossing both ways but it's not always so. The morning of the first crossing I woke up with a big smile and the little inconveniences of the crossing made me laugh: how I managed to hit my face on the shower wall, the waiters in the restaurant trying to keep cups of coffee balanced on a tray, the woman in the armchair who tipped over, etc. I was sick once during the outbound crossing but I loved the gentle pitching, the passengers dancing around the corridors, the view of the horizon, the dark blue sea and seeing the birds and whales.
