My suggestion
Although it's fairly easy to get to El Chalten and find accommodation under your own steam, to make your life simpler, I suggest you take up one of the transport and accommodation packages offered by the local agencies.
El Chalten is a village in Argentine Patagonia, in the county of Lago Argentino. It's about 200 km from El Calafate. The village is the departure point for the unmissable and magnificent excursions to Cerro Torre and Mont Fitz Roy.
My suggestion
Before you go trekking find out about the state of the trails - rain can flood them. Other than that, it's pointless employing a guide because the trails are well signposted and easily accessible.
At 220km from El Calafate, El Chaltén is a little isolated town in the heart of Patagonia's beautiful countryside. El Chaltén is the perfect departure point for the region's many hikes.

Whether you're planning to hike or attack one of the legendary summits, check out weather conditions in advance and make sure you let the rangers know where you're going.

El Chalten's weather is very changeable and its micro-climate means the sky is often cloudy. Stay there several days so you will have a chance to see Cerro Fitz Roy in the sunlight, it's a unique spectacle!
