Imperial Russia for a royal honeymoon

If you want something magical and majestic to remember then Russia is a perfect destination for your honeymoon .

A magically royal honeymoon

If you would like a magical honeymoon then a visit to Russia's palaces seems the ideal thing. There are two that are worth a visit only 30 kilometres from St Petersburg. Peterhof Palace, with its mxture of royal styles (baroque, German, Russian and Rococo), which was built on the shores of the Gulf of Finland by Peter the Great at the beginning of the 18th century, is as magnificent as Versailes.

Catherine Palace in Pushkin (which is also known as Tsarskoye Selo) was buit a few years later by Elizabeth I and is famous for its Amber Room. There is nothing more magical or romantic during your honeymoon than walking in a huge park where you come across different follies (a bridge, a column, a tower...) which make you feel like Alice in Wonderland.

An urban honeymoon

When you get back to St Petersburg you can take a boat trip to visit the canals and then have a romantic walk on Vasilyevsky Island, where you you have a magnificent view of the city. Not forgetting those classic royal sites, the Hermitage and the orthodox churches (Our Saviour on Spilled Bood Cathedral, or St Isaac's where you can climb up to look out over the city).

Its northern charm means that St Petersburg is probably the most obvious choice for a honeymoon in Russia but Moscow also has some things worth seeing. What could be better than walking hand in hand by the water in Gorky Park after visiting one of the impressive underground stations, followed by an evening at the ballet in the Bolshoi Theatre? If you are looking for a bit of peace in a city that is always on the go then you don't need to look far: just a few stops on the underground will take you to one of the most beautiful monasteries in Russia, Novodevichy Convent.

A wild and majestic honeymoon

If you prefer a honeymoon that is off the beaten track then Russia, the biggest country in the world, is the dream location for discovering wild landscapes and scenery that will make you fall in love all over again...but this time with Russia! An ideal place for this is Kizhi Island which is a museum and nature reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage site. In both summer and winter you can admire the great expanses of wild countryside with only birds to the disturb the peace, or you can wonder at the architecture of the Transfiguration Church which was built without using a single nail. There couldn't be anywhere more magical for your honeymoon! If you are still hungry to discover more Russian marvels then Siberia and Lake Baikal have never been so close...
