At first I had not planned to stop in Maun. I was only meant to be stopping over at the airport in between <a href="/botswana/"> a safari in the delta </a> and the rest of my trip. But a silly mistake in my flight bookings led to me spend half a day here.
So, I walked round the streets of Maun to pass the time; I hung about in the small handicraft shops, had a drink in a bar and chatted with a few people who were curious about me. To my great surprise, in relation to what I had experienced in Kenya or in Morocco, people here are a lot more relaxed about the sight of a western girl walking about alone. Nobody called out to me, nobody insisted that I buy their goods at all cost. Life just takes its course in Maun , which is so refreshing!
Various dogs, cats, hens, goats, cows and others roam the streets, farmers come and go on their tractors in between two safari tour operator vehicles, street hawkers rest in the shade of their stalls, while air-charter pilots run to buy a leg of chicken in between two flights to the delta...
