When to go to Austria?

Fans of culture will love Austria. Discover the home of the Hapsburgs in Vienna or the Belvedere Palace, home to superb art collections. Head to Schönbrunn castle and visit the museum quarter and the old Hapsburg stables. Take time to admire the Salzburg residence, and take a stroll through Vienna's streets to immerse yourself in the country's culture. You can travel all year round: Austria's towns are just as charming in Summer as in Winter.

A hiking trip to Austria will be sure to cater for relaxation and a complete rest. Take the famous Zillertal walking tour or the Radsattel tour, which climbs to 3,000 metres! A hike through Austria's incredible natural scenery: what could be more thrilling for a fan of hiking or a traveller in search of peace and quiet? Head there between June and September, when the temperatures are mildest and snow has given way to the pretty colours of Spring and Summer.

If you like cycling, you've chosen the right destination! Take the famous Danube cycle path, going from the German border to Slovakia. You can also choose to cycle around the famous lake Constance or on the Dachstein route. Opt for the period between June and September so as to avoid the chill. Austria is equally a fantastic destination for winter sports. Whether you choose to ski at Kitzbühel, one of the most well-known stations, or at Schladming, you'll love the scenery. Go between December and March for the best skiing weather.

Take the cable car to discover one of the most beautiful panoramas of the country from the top of the Hintertuxer glacier. Visit the Hohensalzburg fortress and look down on Salzburg from a dizzying height. And, why not, have a ride on Vienna's ferris wheel! Austria has as many captivating towns as beautiful stretches of countryside, so get to a height for a better view. Head there between June and September, as well as during the winter sports season for the mountain viewpoints.

One dream come true would be to ring in the New Year at the Vienna National Opera to the sound of its philharmonic orchestra. Celebrate Mozart week too, during the month of January, with various different concerts in Salzburg. From the month of May, the good weather festivals kick off. At Milstatt, there are various concerts between May and September, while Vienna hosts a pop rock festival and dance and theatre shows take place in other cities throughout the country. In October, there's a film festival – and be sure not to miss the famous Christmas markets at the end of the year.
