An update from Evaneos

Best places to visit in Sweden

Sweden is a destination which seems to be perpetually on the rise... Evidenced, for example, by its education results, its laws are ahead of their time and Swedish ex-pats seem almost defiantly happy. It's also famous for its design, and of course for Lapland. All good reasons to give Sweden a shot.

As the destination is slowly becoming more open to tourism, we've done a quick round-up of the unmissable spots. Thankfully, tips and advice from the Evaneos experts are just a few clicks away, helping you gather ideas. A stay with the Sami in Lapland? A road trip around Stockholm? Unmissable sites in the country? No need to look any further: it's all here!

Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, is a veritable Venice of the North, and it's worth spending a few days here. Not only is the lifestyle there great, and you'll find yourself lingering at every shop; there are also many activities you can do on its string of islands: visit the old town on the island of Gamla Stan, Vasa museum, Skansen open-air museum, etc.

In winter and summer alike, a trip to Lapland is a must. Kiruna remains an imperative destination for hiking, particularly before Christmas, with its village dedicated to Father Christmas, and an ice hotel. You'll find beautiful areas with frozen lakes and beautiful forests ideally suited to a sleigh ride with a team of dogs towards the Abisco national park and towards Skellefteå.Try your hand at fishing, snowmobile-driving and walking in snowshoes too.

If you've got a little more time, consider visiting the Göteborg archipelago and lake Vättern as well. These are worthwhile excursions when leaving from Stockholm in Southern Sweden.

It's over to you to explore the Evaneos website and discover the places that will make it to your Scandinavia itinerary.

Abisko is located north of the Arctic Circle, perfect for a unique Lapp experience.
Bohuslän is one of the many historic provinces of Sweden. It covers a part of the west coast of the country and extends to the north of Gothenburg as far as Norway. It lives mainly from fishing and tourism.
The second Swedish city with its half a million inhabitants, Gothenburg is an adorable port with a more peaceful rhythm than Stockholm.
Located in the Baltic sea, a few hours by ferry from Stockholm, the island of Gotland is the largest Swedish island. The main town, Visby, is recognised as a UNESCO world heritage site.
Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, is actually an archipelago made up of several islands (14 total) of different sizes.
Jönköping is situated next to the very large lake Vättern, which made the city's fortune and continues to contribute to its finances. But this hasn't spoiled the scenery, which, thanks to this beautiful lake, is magnificent.
A region in the north of Scandinavia, Lapland is all about great open spaces, nature and beauty in its purest state.
The Samis are the native people of Lapland, the territory in the north of Norway, Sweden and Finland.
Considered as the last wild space in Europe, the Sarek National Park is very difficult to access. Only experienced trekkers stride across the valleys and hills of the park. No paths nor refuge is available.
Skellefteå is a small, calm town in the south of Swedish Lapland. You go there to enjoy nature and the many sporting activities in the surroundings.
Extending into the bay from Stockholm, the Stockholm Archipelago is an extraordinary place that consists of thousands of mostly uninhabited islands.
A large national park in the north of Sweden, Stora Sjöfallet has more mountains and woodlands than the other large national parks neighbouring it.
An 8 ml walk from Abisko Tourist Station in Abisko National Park, the Abiskojaure mountain lake will please trekking and wild hiking enthusiasts !
The most visited museum in Scandinavia, The Vasa is indisputably a must-see in Stockholm. It contains a war ship from the 17th century in an extraordinary state of conservation.
The Padjelanta National Park is ideal for an easy hike over several days to discover the last big wild space in Europe. Boreal forests, tundra and a small chance of rather timid bears!
The capital of Sweden is a real architectural gem which is just as good in winter as in summer.
Lake Akkajaure is very long, bordering several national parks, and the mountains around it make the setting wonderful. If, like me, you are lucky enough to arrive via the Padjelanta trail, it comes as beautiful surprise.
The charming region of Dalarna is often regarded as a miniature Sweden. It has everything to offer: ethnographic museums, small towns and peaceful nature.
Sweden has an exceptional coastline which is one of its main tourist attractions, like its archipelagoes and islands.
'Gamla Stan' means 'old town' in Swedish, and for good reason, because it's on this little island in the centre of Stockholm that the old town of the northern capital is found.
The Vättern, whose name probably comes from the word "vatten", "water" in Swedish, is the second biggest lake in Sweden and the fifth biggest in Europe.
Nikkaluokta is the departure point for Kebnekaise, the highest peak in Sweden which reaches 2,109 metres. For fans of fresh air and unbridled nature!
The country's second island, Öland is also the summer destination favoured by Swedes.
Although off the beaten track, the small village of Saltoluokta has something for everyone. It's perfect for experiencing unspoiled nature first hand.
A small town on the left shore of Lake Vattern, Vadstena is known for its Medieval castle, Abbey, churches and houses. This place is well off the beaten track but worth a visit.
Constituting one of the stages of the famous Swedish walking trail, the Kungsleden, Alesjaure is a place of incredible beauty: hikers will be able to soak in its boundless views of lakes, mountains and tundra.
A small picturesque town, located on the shores of huge Lake Vättern. This is where polkagris, the twisted colourful sweet that you see hooked onto the Christmas tree in illustrated children's books, was born.
Situated in Lapland, half an hour away from the town of Kiruna, Jukkasjärvi is particularly famous for its ice hotel.
Located above the Arctic Circle and peaking at 2111 m, the Kebnekaise is the highest summit of Sweden, from which you get a broad view over the mountains of Swedish Lapland.
The Kungsleden, literally the Royal Road, is the best known and most frequented hiking trail in Sweden.
