Rwanda Akangera And Congo Nile Trail

This safari brings you to one of the most interesting places in Rwanda: the rocky highlands and wet plains of Akagera national park, home to big African game. Take a walk along the shores of Lake Kivu, through the famous Congo-Nile Divide watershed. Then, you will track the endangered mountain gorilla on the slopes of the dramatic Volcanoes National Park.

Day 1: Arrival in Rwanda

Upon arrival at Kigali international airport, you'll be met by one of our representatives and transferred to your hotel. Peacefully nestled along picturesque hilltops, Kigali is a thriving African city notable for its cleanliness, orderliness, and hospitality. Overnight in Kigali.

Day 2: Akagera National Park discovery

Early start to the Akagera national park. It covers an area of 1,200 km² in the east of Rwanda, is set at a relatively low altitude on the border with Tanzania, Akagera national park could scarcely be more different in mood to the breezy cultivated hills that characterise much of Rwanda. Dominated scenically by the labyrinth of swamps and lakes that follow the meandering course of the Akagera River, the most remote source of the Nile, this is archetypal African savannah landscape of tangled acacia woodland interspersed with open grassland. Akagera is, above all, big game country!

As well as being home to the shy oribi and to the elusive topi, the Highlands afford a breathtaking view across the undulating hills, rolling grassland to the extensive series of lakes, linked by papyrus swamps. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, waterbuck are some of the game roaming this peaceful heaven. The bird life is also remarkable. The diverse habitats of the area are home to over 500 species of birds. Morning short game drive. Lunch at the lodge. Game drive and boat ride on lake ihema. Overnight into the park.

Day 3: Full day safari in Akagera

Game drive from south to north. During the game drive along a well designed network of tracks, there are plenty of animals one can see including elephants, buffalo, zebra, bushbaby, antelopes and many other mammal species. On rare occasions, one can see species such as leopard, lion and black rhino. As one of the most scenic savanna in East Africa, the game drive in Akagera provides an opportunity to see gentle hills blending in beautifully with lowland swamps and water bodies. Overnight into the park.

Day 4: Heading towards the lake Kivu

Leave early morning towards Kigali. Follow the road as it winds through some of the many hills. Lunch in Kigali. Continue towards Lake Kivu with stops on the route, visiting Ndaba waterfall on the way. Lake Kivu is the largest lake with its 2.699 km² and is divided between Congo and Rwanda. The lake lies at an altitude of 1.459 m and is the highest in Africa. This famous lake is one of a string of huge freshwater lakes which lie along Africa's Great Rift Valley. It's one of Africa’s Great Lakes and is the deepest fresh water lake in the world. Surrounded by the Rift Valley and Virunga mountains, it has picturesque sandy shores and provides a beautiful setting to relax. Overnight on the shore of the lake.

Day 5: Nice day of hiking towards the Congo Nile Trail

The Congo Nile Trail walking journey is an all inclusive spectacular walk from the southern shores of Lake Kivu to the northern shores through the famous Congo Nile divide watershed. To walk the entire trail takes 10 days, but for this itinerary 2 days are fine. Unlike any other walk, the scenery is geographically spectacular and ever changing - villages on top of hills, rivers, waterfalls, reefs, lakes and sandy beaches. The experiences are diverse: walking, community interaction, historical tales, a magnificent scenic walk along Lake Kivu shores and a landscape of a thousand hills. This morning you have to wake up early as you have will have to drive for 1 hour from your hotel to Bumba, then hike for a minimum of 6 hours to get to Kinunu, then onwards to Cyimbiri. Following the trail between community fields, crossing the river Coko before getting to Kibingo Health Center. Picnic lunch nearby the Gatunga village (commercial centre, with market on Tuesday), and the climb the trail until the main Rubavu. Overnight on the shores of Lake Kivu.

Day 6: Second day and still walking activity

Today, you will hike for 6 hours per day on lake shores interacting with the local community and enjoying the surrounding scenic views and banana plantations. Follow the trail, visiting the Cyimbiri coffee washing station, the schools… stop for a picnic on the edge of the lake. You might also see the fishermen coming back from the traditional overnight fishing, and kids playing near the lake. Continue on the road up to Rubavu. Overnight on the shore of Lake Kivu.

Day 7: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Early morning drive to Volcanoes National Park. Options available include a Gorilla Trek, a trek to the habitat of a group of Golden Monkeys (cercopithecus mitis kandti) which are endemic to the Virungas, visit the Karisoke Research centre built by Dian Fossey and the site of her grave, located in the park between the Karisimbi and Bisoke Volcanoes - two hours trekking accompanied by a park ranger, or to climb Bisoke volcano with its superb crater lake. Overnight near Volcanoes national park.

Day 8: Departure

Enjoy during the early morning hours the peaceful atmosphere of the volcanoes range. Return to Kigali. Depending on your departure flight, you will enjoy exploring the great cultural activities - including genocide museum, meet the artists and their work at the dazzling Inema gallery, visit craft shop,… Lunch and airport transfer.
