Adventure in Morocco

A journey through Morocco goes from the sea to the desert...

Geography and climate

Mountains, plains and desert: three words which summarise the geography of the kingdom of Morocco quite well.

If you want to give a more schematic portrayal, it would be enough to say that the high reliefs are in the north of the country and by the Mediterranean with the Rif, and the inside lands of the Atlas, the only mountain range in northern Africa. Situated in the High-Atlas, the Jbel Toubkal, which reaches 4167 metres, is the highest summit in the country. Visible from Marrakech's ramparts, the summits of the "roof of Morocco" participate largely to the extraordinary diversity of the scenery which the traveller will encounter during their adventure in the country.

Wedged between the Atlantic Ocean and the Rif and Atlas hills, the plains nevertheless occupy a large part of Morocco's area. That of Gharb stretched for more the 600,000 hectares and is highlighted by its growing of rice and tobacco.

In the far south, we penetrate the desert with the Chebbi dunes, by which the Sahara penetrates into Moroccan territory.

The climate, as you can easily guess, is therefore very varied in Morocco, according to the influence of the ocean, the Mediterranean, the mountains, the continent or the Sahara, with as many very large differences in temperature.

An endangered but protected wildlife

Even if hunting, droughts and culture have put it at risk, Morocco's wildlife has remained extremely rich, still counting within its ranks some exceptional species, like the barbary stag, the desert hedgehog, the camel and, less friendly, the North African cobra. Fortunately, and you will realise this during your discovery of the country, Morocco has created reserves and natural zones to protect these animals.

Plants that are full of life

More than 4500 species populate Moroccan plant life. The variety of relief and climate which we have mentioned above explain this state of affairs. Home to 2,500,000 hectares of forest, a trip to Morocco introduces you to the mysteries of botany. So start with being interested by palm trees and their fruits, dates, full of vitamin B.
