Day 2: Marvel at Chichén Itzá

Spend your morning exploring the peaceful, colonial town of Valladolid. Appreciate the pretty pastel coloured houses, while eating an ice cream. In the afternoon, visit one of the 7 Modern Wonders of the World. Built by the Maya, and then reorganized by the Toltecs, Chichén Itzá symbolises the unification of both religious cultures. It is the largest archaeological site in Yucatán. Spend the evening strolling the colourful streets of Mérida. There are many historical monuments and delightful little plazas. This is perfect for an evening of listening to local music and sampling some Yucatecan food.

Casa del Balam (Mérida)

Day 3: Visit Cenotes and Unearth the History of Uxmal

Travel through the forest to swim in cenotes, pools of water unique to this part of the world. Stop at a typical Mayan market where the colours of fruits and vegetables are matched with those of the women’s clothing. Explore two cenotes and have a refreshing swim. After, explore the archaeological site of Uxmal which is peaceful and not widely visited by tourists… Uxmal, in the Mayan language, means “Thrice Built”, but in reality the city was constructed five times. Spend the night close to Uxmal in Mayan-style accommodation. Enjoy the peace and quiet after a day of exploring.

Sotuta de Peon is the only Mexican hacienda where henequen (or sisal) is still produced. Learn about how the plant is processed and take a ride on a horse-drawn cart through the fields. To cool down, go swimming in a cenote on the property of the Hacienda. In the afternoon, travel to the beautiful colonial town of Izamal, which is entirely painted in yellow. Spend your evening in the historic centre and enjoy the views of Mayan settlements from your hotel.
