An immense travellers' love it/hate it metropolis!

My suggestion:
Despite scare stories put out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this vibrant Central American capital is growing in popularity. It's certainly worth staying for a couple of days.
Summary:

Sprawling capital, car-ridden urban jungle that's known for its criminal tendencies, Guatemala City is a modern town, that's as fascinating as it is dire. Guides and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs advise visitors to give it a miss during a trip to Guatemala, so if you're there make sure you keep on your guard.

The cause of violence here is both economic and social; an urban setting where rich 'westernised' residential streets clash with poverty-stricken zones. To better understand the country's history and oilgarchy, you should head to the National Palace (zone 1), an ode to the republic, thanks to the caudillo Jorge Ubico. From the main cemetery and resting place of numerous presidents/oligarchs (zone 3) to the huge boulevards that run between zone 14 and 1, you'll also find the university and libetarian Francisco Marroquin in zone 10, alongside museums in zones 1 and 13. Just some of a number of fascinating sites that make Guatemala City a vibrant place to tour, even by foot.
