A complete trip in the pristine nature of Greenland: Comfort & Adventure.

A week of travel, not to say a week of exploration and adventure, that will help us to intensively know both sides of Greenland. On the one hand his last nature: huge glacier fronts, walk on a glacier tongue of millions of years, zodiac navigation and kayaking among icebergs; secondly, its people and traditions: inuit towns like Narsaq or Qaqortoq and idyllic villages like Igaliku or Qassiarsuk with its viking ruins part of the Unesco World Heritage since 2017.

After a short flight from Iceland or Copenhagen we will find ourselves in a new world, Greenland, where roads are the exception and where nature is practically untouched. Discover iceberg-covered seas and the paradoxes of a country located in the unexplored Arctic but called "Green Land" which, nevertheless, has the second-largest polar ice cap in the world just behind Antarctica.

In just few days you will gain first-hand knowledge of the home of Inuit, the history of the viking first settlers, its most beautiful valleys, the most impressive glaciers and its waters dotted with blue-tinged ice… and after an adventurous day, you will relax in comfortable greenlandic hotels.

From August onwards we will also enjoy the awe-inspiring show of the Northern Lights, in a place –southern Greenland– famous all over the world for the frequency in which these “spirits of the north” can be seen on summer nights.

Optional Excursion: Excursion to Hvalsoy Church

Boat transfer to “Hvalsoy” or Whale Island, with the ancient Norse name “Hvalseyfjordur”, where we will found the ruins of Hvalsoy Church. Built in the 14th century, Hvalsoy is the best preserved of the churches in Greenland from that period.

The fells and the fjord which surround the church have not changed at all over the centuries. Southern Greenland holds the ruins of the Norse Settlements and their Inuit neighbours. Recently, UNESCO inscribed this old Viking farming landscape as World Heritage. In the afternoon, transfer by zodiac boat to Narsaq city.

Day 4: Qaleraliq Adventure Glacier Camp and Excursion on Ice

In the morning we will set off for Qaleraliq camp towards the Inlandsis or Greenland’s ice cap. We will arrive at a cozy, enchanting camp set on a sandy beach, which contrasts with a spectacular view of three glacier fronts from Qaleraliq’s glacier.

Glacier fronts and excursion on ice. We will navigate along the glacier fronts on a RIB boat, admiring the beauty of their vertical ice walls and numerous icebergs as we approach them along their more than 10 kilometers descent to the sea. These glacier fronts extended in only one but the dramatic progress of climate change has divided it in three separated tongues.

From there we will start the ice excursion. An impressive trek using crampons (organized to be suitable for all travelers) on one of the oldest masses of ice in the planet. We will explore its crevasses, drains, seracs, and other ice formations, which give an incredible, labyrinthine quality to this glacier.

An expert mountain guide will be in charge to make sure we are provided with the appropriate equipment, and to ensure the safety of the group during the trip, while he shares with us his knowledge about the special characteristics of the glaciers in the South of Greenland. A unique experience, exciting and original, surprising both first-time comers and those used to the peculiarities of the glacier world. One of the most impressive sights and one of the best excursions in all Greenland.

Picnic lunch in the ice or at the camp depending on conditions.

In the afternoon, transfer by zodiac boat to Narsaq. We will be surprised by enormous icebergs falling off from the Eqaloruutsit Glacier and floating throw all the Sermilik Fjord. Sometimes, they are blocking access to Narsaq ports.

With about 1500 inhabitants, Narsaq is the third most populated town in South Greenland.

After that we will navigate to Itilleq.

Once we disembark from the boat, we will start and easy hike to cross the “Kongevejen”, or Path of the Kings. Our destination will be the idyllic Igaliku, a small Inuit settlement inhabited by no more than 40 people. This town is famous for being the most beautiful settlement in Greenland, and where we can discover the ruins of Gardar, the archdiocese and religious capital of Viking Greenland, the Norse bishop’s farm – the largest in all of Greenland- and the setting of Anders Olsen’s farm, the unique architecture of the Igaliku stone houses. The area has been recently declared part of the Unesco World Heritage List.

However, green hills provide guests a warm relax in a quiet environment.

Hike back to Itilleq and boat excursion to Qooroq fjord. This is probably the most active and spectacular glacier in South Greenland. We will navigate among blocks of ice until the density of ice is such that we can no longer continue. Wonderful sight of chaotic ice floating around us.

We will continue the navigation on our zodiac boat to Narsarsuaq. Car transfer to Hotel Narsarsuaq.

This Norse and Greenlandic core farming area were in 2017 inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List under the title: Kujataa Greenland: A Norse and Inuit farming landscape on the Edge of the Ice Cap. Qassiarsuk area represent the most comprehensive and rich example of both Norse and Greenlandic farming histories and contains ruins of large cattle-based Norse farms and their numerous satellite sites including, not least, Erik the Red’s Brattahlid. It was also here that Otto Frederiksen in 1924 established the first sheep farm after Igaliku, founding today’s settlement of Qassiarsuk.

Later on, 4x4 trip to the beautiful Tasiusaq farm, where seven people live in notable isolation next to Sermilik fjord, which is almost always blocked by the ice from icebergs coming from Eqaloruutsit glacier.

Picnic at Tasiusaq farm.
