Some say that Porto-Vecchio is to Corsica what Saint-Tropez is to the Côte d'Azur. It's true that the town and its surrounding area bring in a significant part of the island's tourist influx, and there's a reason for this. It's one of the loveliest towns and its nearby coast is home to some of the most idyllic beaches you'll see during your trip to Corsica.
Located on a slight, rocky headland, the town is overlooked by the Ospedale Massif and towers above a large bay which provides a gorgeous setting. I particularly liked strolling along the banks and cafes, still with one foot in the town and with all the time in the world to contemplate the sea.
Then I headed towards the old town and the Genoese citadel, with a more austere atmosphere, but without a doubt, more authentic. La Porte Génoise (The Genoese Gate) or the Bastion de France give a good idea of what the town used to be like.
