The itinerary has been created by our local agency with one idea in mind: to inspire you. Every element can be adapted to your needs and interests, from duration to accommodation and activities.
Upon arrival into Belize International Airport, you'll be met by a representative from our local travel agency and transferred to your hotel in San Ignacio. Depending on the time of your flight, you and your family will have the whole day to relax or explore your surroundings on foot.
Today, you'll have the whole day free to choose from the many activities on offer. For families, we recommend canoeing, river tubing, a guided hike, a night hike, or mountain biking.
After breakfast, your local guide will pick you up at the hotel to begin your horse-riding adventure through farmlands and jungle trails, leading to the Mopan River. Along the way, you'll stop off to visit Xunantunich Archaeological Site, across the green crystalline waters of the Mopan River.
Xunantunich is the largest ceremonial centre in the Belize River Valley, boasting house mounds, pyramids, palaces, and a large decorated castle with stucco friezes and masks. Its location on a natural limestone ridge also provides a fantastic panoramic view. After your visit, you'll have the rest of the evening free to relax.
After breakfast, a representative from our local travel agency will meet you and your family at your hotel and take you on an excursion to learn about the Maya history of chocolate, see cacao trees up close, and taste raw cacao beans from their vibrant yellow pods! You'll start by helping to roast and grind nature's treasure with stone tools before sitting back to enjoy the distinctive flavour of a healthy dark chocolate drink that was once enjoyed by only the most elite Mayas. Next, you'll get to participate in making your own authentic Maya meal in a relaxing Maya thatch house.
After lunch, your hosts will treat you to a hands-on chocolate-making workshop and you'll have an educational journey through the preparation of the cacao bean to make cocoa paste. The rest of the afternoon can be spent at your own leisure.
After breakfast, you and your family will be transferred to Hopkins for the next stage of your Belize adventure. En-route, you'll have the opportunity to explore St. Hermans Cave, with a picturesque 180 ft. wide entrance with a sheer cliff wall draped in vines.
The cave itself is at the base of another sinkhole with an underground stream that connects it to the inland Blue Hole sinkhole. You'll have the amazing experience of walking the steps that Mayan Shamans walked as they entered Xibalba (the entrance to the underworld), taking in the spectacular crystal chambers, speleothems, and Mayan artifacts with your guide. Once you've finished your visit, you'll float peacefully back to the entrance of the cave on an inner tube.
After breakfast, a representative from our local travel agency will meet you and your family at your hotel and take you on a boat ride down the southern coast and then inland and up the Monkey River! You'll be able to look out for beautiful flora and fauna, as well as wildlife such as toucans, heron, tanager, iguanas, howler monkeys, and crocodiles sunning themselves on the banks of the river.
You will also stop for a gentle hike through the jungle, where your guide will point out herbal plants which are used for medicine. You'll also see insects, snakes, monkeys, and if you're lucky, maybe a tapir or an elusive jaguar. At the end of the tour you'll be driven back to your hotel and will have the rest of the afternoon to relax.
For the next two days, you'll have free time to relax and soak up the sun in your seaside hotel before the end of your tour. Why not take a day trip to a nearby site, or try a snorkelling or diving excursion?
Enjoy a last breakfast at your hotel before your driver picks you up and transfers you to Dangriga Air Strip for your flight to Belize International Airport. You'll arrive with plenty of time to take your flight back home. We hope you and your family have had an amazing time in Belize and look forward to seeing you again soon!
